Veneer is a tin slice -about 0.6mm that is taken off the log. This is done in two ways. The first is the log cut lengthways to expose the wood and then thin slices cut from the log. The second method is the log is turned on a lathe and continuously cut to form a large roll of veneer. This is usually done for the lower trunk to produce bur veneer.

The veneer is used to cover wood to give a desired finish. It is cut to an approximate size of the work piece and glued onto it. It is then compressed with a force of about 1 to 2 tons and heated to a temperature of 120°C.

Veneer is used on wood for many purposes. IF the required wood is not available then the finish is usually of veneer on top a quality wood or MDF. Nowadays the wood is force dried in kilns to remove moist of the moisture content. With this forced drying, the wood will warp, twist and bend into unnatural shapes. Also when exposed to the weather the wood will naturally pick up moisture from the air. By using veneer on the wood it then stops the wood from twisting further, and it prevents the wood from absorbing moisture from the air.

The cost is much cheaper than solid wood, uses recyclable wood and shavings, thus saving on forests. It is also flame retardant and moisture retardant.

Yes and here are two examples. In comparison to steel on a weight to weight basis wood is much stronger, and when heated the wood will form a charcoal layer thus preventing it from causing a fire, whereas steel will continue to get hotter and, if temperature permit, will eventually melt.
